I own a beautiful Junghans Mega Solar Ceramic. It is a simple sober watch. However with solar power and radio accuracy it is perfect for me. After 14 years the internal accu (battery) that is charged by the solar panel has died.
Junghans Mega Solar
So I asked Junghans to exchange the battery. I thought this to be a plain and simple question. Hereunder the summary of the correspondance which I send to Matthias Stotz, the CEO of Junghans. Stotz, Since 2001 I wear a Junghans watch with great pleasure. It is a beautiful Mega Solar Ceramic 018-1720 (No 9919957). After all these years the watch still looks perfect and also works perfectly! Thank you very much!
However, after 14 years the accu / battery has died. This means that it can not hold the power for much more than a few days instead of months. I understand this that such a battery needs to be changed. For this, I sent below request to your factory in Germany. Since then the problems began and I am very disappointed with the responds and lack of service by Junghans service department. The accu / battery can easily be bought in China for less than €2,- a piece. But I understand that this type of watch needs special tooling to be opened and I am very willing to pay € 20 or even € 30,- for the accu exchange.
If possible I would even gladly do it myself. Below you can read the full correspondence with your service department. Herewith the summary with a few responses that unpleasantly surprised me: 1 Junghans is unable to specify upfront how much an accu exchange costs. 2 Follow up by me revealed that there is no accu anymore of this type (so the costs of € 36,- for shipping and checking the watch would have been for nothing).
3 Then, I was offered a complete exchange of the inner work for €180,- (??!!). So, in terms of a car: “I would like to have new tires' and as responds: “We do not have these tires, but we can exchange the engine of your car”. 4 After even further follow-up by me it turns out that the inner exchange would be inclusive a a new accu! So, Junghans does seem to have spare accu’s! 5 My logical question then to have this accu used only (instead of the full inner watch exchange). But then I received the responds that this was not possible. I worked myself for the customer department of a large company.
Therefore I am focused, maybe more than usual, on other company’s service quality. The watch was quite expensive. € 500,- back in 2001. For this amount of money I would expect a much better customer service than the one I receive now. My proposal: I sent the watch to Junghans factory. Junghans replaces the accu for € 25,- and I pay an extra € 10 for shipping & handling.
Thanks for you understanding and cooperation, and I trust to hear from you soon. With kind regards, Frans Hartmann Anyone having similar experiences with Junghans with respect to battery exchanges?
Matlab file read. Dear Frans, I have a Junghans Mega Solar Ceramic purchased in Europe in 2003 and it has exactly the same problem as your watch in that the battery charged by the solar cell can no longer hold its charge for more than a few hours. I contacted the Junghans Service Center in the USA, and was told that all parts for the watch are discontinued and the only solution would be to replace the whole mechanism with a non-solar one for $275. Like yours, the watch still looks as beautiful as on the first day and, other than the battery, everything else works perfectly. As a last resort, I am planning to contact Junghans Germany next, but having found your post here, I was wondering if you were ever able to repair the watch and if so, how did you manage to do it. Thank you very much for any information and best regards! Service Center for Junghans - Atlantic Time Tech in New Jersey - SUCKS.
Correspondence with Junghans customer service - is polite, helpful and courteous. The above 2 issues seem bad policy to discontinue parts for a watch sold in past. I am not sure what the protocol is to make parts available after model ends - in certain industries - such as cars - there is a clear time window for which parts must be made available. Maybe in watches it is about 10 - which seems to be the case if the watch model was last made in 2001 and since stopped (??) - is that what you are saying? I will just say that the Junghans Service Center in the US was courteous and quick to respond to my inquiry above, even though the solution they offered is obviously not practical, as the watch would become non-solar and I would have to send the watch in to change the conventional battery every year or so.
I have contacted Junghans Germany directly regarding this and they very quickly told me to talk to the Junghans US Service Center (Atlantic Time Technicians). I have replied that the solution ATT offers is not really an option and asked whether replacing the battery charged by the solar cell is really impossible. I suspect it is because they will claim the parts are discontinued, but I would still think that a careful watchmaker with an off-the shelf battery cell and precision soldering skills would be able to fix it. Not much hope here, but I will report the outcome of the exchange with Junghans Germany, for reference.
That must be a big disappointment for you. Such a story would not suprise me for a low end watch, but the money you paid for that watch is not peanuts, and for it to die after a decade with no practical solution offered is very poor form I feel. I am impressed with Junghans Gernmany prompt replies though. Edit: Actually, the more I think about this, the more it seems wrong. Junghans would have known that the battery life was about 10 years, but decided not to have the parts in stock anyway. Essentially they were selling a very expensive throwaway watch. I'm sure this is not exclusive to Junghans though - I would be very wary of buying any quartz watch I expected to be able to use beyond 5 or so years.
